Quick Articulation Data Forms! (ideas and a freebie!!)

I've been browsing the speech therapy Facebook groups a lot lately.  It seems like data collection is a HOT topic!  People have been asking about forms, methods, etc.  I have also seen people talk about 5 minute articulation programs.  Yes, there are quick articulation programs commercially available (I have reviewed on my blog two programs currently available -- check them out by clicking HERE and HERE!).  But I also like to create my own programs that can be individualized for my specific students! Soooo....I created my own form that I can easily use to create a program and collect easy data!
This form I plan to use this next school year.  Before the student comes to speech, I will fill out a chart section.  Each section has 10 slots for a "target."  What can the target include:

  • sounds in isolation
  • CV, VC, or CVC words or nonsense words
  • words
  • phrases
  • sentences
  • or anything!
I have a slot of the top for the date, place to put + or - to mark data and a place on the bottom for total results.  I plan on photocopying this form double sided and making MANY copies and placing them in a file folder on my desk.  Once I start completing these forms, I can keep them in the students folder, file in my filing cabinet, or in my data collection book that I keep for ALL my students.  Learn more about this book by clicking HERE.

How will I create my word lists??  It depends on the student!!  Do I need one syllable, two, or more??  Have they mastered some words but not others??  Do I was minimal pairs?  There are TONS of word lists available on the internet!  One of my favorite websites to grab word lists is Home Speech Home.

I know I am looking forward to this method since it is easy to prepare, use, and collect data. You can access this form in my TpT store FREE by clicking HERE!

Articulation Carnival (APP REVIEW!)

I was so excited when I was contacted by Virtual Speech Center.  They created a brand new app to address articulation.  I was so excited when they asked if I would review it!  I jumped at the offer!!  Thanks Virtual Speech Center for the opportunity.  Reminder, all thoughts and opinions are mine!

Here is a view of the settings options that you can alter from the main first page when you open up the app:

I like that you can determine whether or not the score is shown (great if students are too competitive and lose track of the goal).  You can turn on or off the game music.  You can decide whether or not to save session audio and how often rewards are provided.

Best part...you can backup data, restore data, and add custom words!!  Backup is great....take it from someone who has had computers randomly FAIL and have to frantically try to get data.  I always back up my data and it is great that an app allows you to!!

Adding custom words:

  • You can easily select which sound target.
  • Then you can select the position of words.
  • Finally, you can add a new image and write the word.
  • This is GREAT if you wanted to include curriculum vocabulary that has the articulation target!!
Just like all of Virtual Speech Center's apps, just click "start" to begin.  It will bring you to the "select students" page.  You can add students and they will be stored in this list.  You just have to then tap the names to add them to the activity.

Then you get to select phoneme(s) for each student.  I love how you can select a different phoneme target for each student.  Great for differentiation.  I don't know about you but when I do this, my students don't even realize they have a different activity/words from their peers!  As you can see below, under each target "button" the button for "edit" is available.  This will allow you to edit which words from the list will be presented.  Did your student master some target words, you can eliminate it.  Do you only want a certain number presented, make it happen here!

Once you are ready, hit "next."  The activity will begin!  You can decide for each student which position of the word will be presented as well as the level (word, phrase, or sentence).  Students can express the label for the picture provided using their target.  You can record their responses, play it back, and then rate their responses "check" "X" and then the "=" looking button for "almost."

I like that the app has a blue "play" button on the bottom.  This is if your student needs a model (or you aren't exactly sure which word is being represented by the picture!).

Just slide the picture to the left to move to the next one!  You can click the "paper" looking button on the top right to add notes.  This is great if you want to document the error made, how many prompts were required, or if a specific strategy was required to get your student produce the target.

Students are rewarded with "balloons" for each "check" mark.  This is a great way for you to easily see how many times they got the production correct. (other than looking at the percentage on the top).

I had selected that after 5 correct responses, students are rewarded with the game.  I like the #5 since it isn't too frequent but keeps students engaged and motivated.  Students are brought to the game page where they can select 4 games to play.  They are just like carnival games!!

Spray Ducks:  Students must touch the "launcher" to spray the ducks going by!  So fun!!  It wasn't too difficult to figure out and play.

Basketball:  Students have to shoot the basketball into the hoop in the time provided!  I know I was terrible at this game but it was still fun!

Balloon Darts: Balloons go around a dart board and you are given darts to "throw" at it by just swiping with your finger.  Students are rewarded with prizes for hitting the balloons.  So fun!

Strength Hammer: By swiping the finger to move the hammer, students must hit the target and see how hard they hit it.  They are rewarded with metals for hitting it hard.

You can go through the entire roll of pictures or click "finish" when you want to end the activity.  Once you hit "finish" you will be brought to the session report.  Here you can see the student, phoneme target, level, position, score, %, the list of words, you can access the audio of their productions, and your notes that you provided throughout the session.  You can also email report from this page.  You can always access reports from the main page.  This is great  if you wanted to remind yourself on how your student performed on the previous session before you worked again.  You can easily access old reports archived by date or goal as well as by student.

You can also access all of the games from the main page.  This could be fun if you wanted to teach students how to play each game before working on the articulation targets.  You can also just use the games as a reinforcer for hard work (especially if they didn't earn it from the app activity).

Overall..this app is a great way to work on articulation targets!!  It makes drilling fun!!  I love that you can add custom words, add notes, and record productions and save them for later!!

Love It & List It! (Articulation Apps!)

It's that time again!!  Jenna over at Speech Room News is hosting another Love It & List It Linky party for your favorite SLP bloggers!!  You can easily check out all of our favorite articulation apps from one spot by clicking HERE!
There are SO many articulation apps available (if you have not noticed already).  I have provided my TOP few that I use often in my speech room (in no particular order since I use them all frequently).

Articulation Scenes

Developed by Smarty Ears, this app is great and motivating!!  My students love the interactive activities and I love the ability to record and play back their productions in sound bombarded activities.  Check out my complete review by clicking HERE!!

Articulation Games

Developed by Virtual Speech Center, this app uses a fun candy theme to work on target sounds in several activities.  YUM!  Check out my complete review by clicking HERE!

Minimal Pair Pack

I love using minimal pairs as a technique for teaching students to discriminate between correct and incorrect productions of target sound.  I dislike trying to come up with the word lists and activities to use while doing this boring drilling task.  This app takes that away!!  Just using the iPad alone is more exciting then index cards!  Click HERE to view my complete review of this app!

How about non-articulation apps?!  Which ones can you use to target speech sounds indirectly?!

The Bag Game
This app is great for working on vocabulary and asking/answering questions.  BUT...you can also have students pick ONLY the objects with their target sounds!!  Click HERE to learn more about this app!

Mneemo
This app is a fun memory game that comes with some images but you can easily add your own.  Why not add the articulation targets?!  Click HERE to learn more about this app.

Also....
Any app by TocaBoca,  ClickySticky, and so much more!!  Which apps do you use?!

Fun With "R" (app review)

I was recently contacted by the developers, Virtual Speech Center, regarding their newest app, Fun With "R"!  /R/ is the trickiest and most common articulation target sound.  Now there is an app just for working on it!  They were generous to provide me with a copy to try out for all of you.  Just remember, the thoughts and opinions are all mine!

If you have any Virtual Speech Center apps, or have seen my other reviews of their apps, this app follows the same format as the others.

Here is a view of the settings you can alter from the main page:

You can work with multiple students and add their names.  It saves what target you worked on last which makes it easy to remember.
Once you "add students" and click their names to select them, you can decide on the three activities, "flashcards" "memory game" and "bingo game."  Then hit "next."  You can then select your targets for each student!
As you can see, you can "edit words."  This way you can remove words that are already mastered or just want to work on a select few.
Flashcards:
This activity is exactly like it sounds.  It shows the student(s) an image and they must say it, they can record it, replay it and then score themselves or you can score it for them.  You can select the following levels (and change them at any time): word, phrase, sentence, initial, medial, and final.  Once you are done with the image, just "swipe" your finger to move it to the next image.

Had enough practice with that one student?  Just go to the arrow next to the student's name to switch users.

Did you select multiple targets?  Want to switch?  Just touch the arrow next to the target on the top and then you can easily switch!
Memory Game
This activity is also like it sounds.  Students must locate matches and remember where the images are in a grid.  After touching each "card," the student must express it using their target sound.  Again, they can record it, replay it, and rate it!  So many opportunities to practice /r/ in a fun and motivating way!

Just like the previous activity, you can easily switch users and targets by touching the arrows on the top!

BINGO Game
Students are given a BINGO board with images incorporating their target sound.  They are given an image on the side to "match."  Don't have it?  Hit next!  Once they have the match, they can practice saying it as they select it!
Again, can easily switch users and targets at any time!  You can also switch to word, phrase, or sentence level at any time too.

Whenever you feel students are ready, or you run out of time, you can hit "finish."  At this time, you are shown a score report:
You can always access these reports from the main page.  LOVE being able to progress monitor and plan future lessons based on progress!
