Winter Context Clues Graphic Organizer FREEBIE!

I have been searching high and low for an organizer to fit my needs for working on context clues.  My students are having a hard time identifying HOW they developed their answers.  They have a hard time locating the actual clues.  I took ideas from a variety of sources and put them all together to create one that works for me and my students.

I created one with a fun winter/snow theme to use for the next few weeks!  How will I use it?  I will use this graphic organizer worksheet while reading a text or playing a context clues game.  Students can fill out a row each time we come to a work they do not know the meaning of!  It doesn't need to be completed in one sitting or one activity which is best part!  It can be used with a wide variety of activities/task cards/texts!  I love graphic organizers that can be used so widely!  It teaches students how to use context clues and offers tons of practice!

DIY Snowman Fun!!

Are you looking for a quick and easy idea to target TONS of language skills all in one?!?!!?  Grab a piece of paper, a marker and some crayons and you are ready to go!!

Before my students arrived, I drew the three balls of snow so it looked like a snowman on a piece of paper.  I also added the cloze sentence strip on the top.  My students still need this assistance in order to produce complete answers.

What could be addressed with this simple activity?

• Snowman vocabulary: what parts does the snowman need?
• Following directions: "draw a scarf on the snowman" "draw three blue buttons on the snowman" You can EASILY make the directions as simple or complex as you need!  Multiple students at different levels?  Give each one different directions, they won't even notice that some are more difficult!
• Prepositions:  I was targeting the concept "on" with this task but you can work on any concept!!  You can have the students draw the pieces or you can do it for them..."where's the ___?"
• Answering questions: "What goes on the head?" "Where's the hat?" "When do you build a snowman?" "Why is the snowman wearing a scarf?"
• Describing:  students can decorate their snowman and tell you what they did using adjectives, colors, locations, parts, functions, and more!

This fun and easy activity can be used with multiple groups or groups with multiple goals!  It is cheap, quick preparation, and can be easily adapted!  How will you use this idea?!

Winter Expanding Vocabulary Fun! (EET Companion Pack!)

I am so excited to announce that my winter EET companion pack is ready!!!  It is a 2-in-1!!!  This should help you survive the cold winter months!

In this pack:
Expanding Vocabulary Snowman Game:
-Print and laminate a snowman for each student.
-Print and laminate the snowman pieces and place them in the middle.
-Print and laminate the visual/directions and display them for your students.  If you have a Smart Board you can display this page on it for your students to see while playing.  This will help them understand what they need in order to win!

-Place the object pile in the middle.  Students will take turns picking an object.  On each object card is an EET “bead”.  They must express the describing concept requested (EET bead).  Once they express that description, they can locate the snowman piece that has that EET bead on it. Students will take turns picking an object and describing it while adding pieces to their snowman until all of the cards run out.  The first student to complete their snowman with all 7 types of pieces/EET beads is the winner!  (**48 object cards included!**)

Expanding Vocabulary Hot Cocoa Game:
-Print and laminate a hot cocoa mug for each student.
-Print and laminate the ingredient pieces and place them in the middle.

Winter Roll, Say & Color Articulation Fun!

My articulation roll & say worksheet games have been a huge hit in my speech room.  From your comments, it seems like your students are enjoying them as well!!  Well...my winter version is FINALLY ready!!

 Grab 2 dice, print the page of the target sound working on, and some crayons and you are ready!  No laminating involved!

Students roll the two dice.  One dice will tell them which row to look at.  The second dice will tell them to count across to determine the target word to say!  You can even make them say that word that many times!!!

Once they say the target, they can color the winter themed picture!
Keep rolling and practicing those target sounds until the entire page is colored!  There are 36 opportunities to practice each target sound!  Can send home the worksheet for review home practice!

**Target sounds included, in the initial and final positions:
/k, g, s, f, v, th, sh, ch, l, r, z/ 
**Initial clusters included: /s/, /r/, and /l/

Winter Early Language File Folder Activities!! (AND GIVEAWAY!!)

It seems like you have been LOVING my file folder packs!!  I have had TONS of requests to create my next one...WINTER!!  Guess what...the time has come..it is finally ready and finished!

What is this pack?!
**Activities that can be used as file folder activities or printed and used as is.  Activities are created to build vocabulary, use complete sentences, and answer questions while incorporating theme concepts.  Tons of visuals and sentence strips provided!

Activities Included:
-What Do They Have?:  Print and glue the boy and girl images onto one side of a file folder.  For each item card, students must use the sentence strips provided to express which person has the different items.  This activity can also be used to work on “who” questions, pronouns, and possessives.

-I Spy In The Winter Scene: Print the scene picture.  Students can use the visual to locate all of the named items.  Goals you can address with this activity: prepositions, answering/asking questions, describing, and using vocabulary in complete sentences.

-What Color Is It?:  Students will sort the winter items into the correct color category.  Each color has a sentence strip to encourage students to expand utterances as they express the different colors.

-Singular or Plural?:  Students will sort the winter items into the correct category, singular or plural.  They can use the sentence strip to express which category it belongs into.

-Present or Past Tense?:  Students will sort the winter verbs into the correct category, present or past tense.  They will also be provided with the sorting visuals for regular or irregular past tense verbs.  Sentence strips will be provided in order to express answers in complete utterances.

-Does It Go On A Snowman?: Students must determine which items go on the snowman and those that do not.  They must answer the yes/no question provided and use the sentence strip to express complete utterances.

Snowmen All Year Companion Pack!

I recently came across this website, We Give Books.  This website is a great way to get access to some popular books that you may not already have in your personal library.  I have always been familiar with the story, "Snowmen at Night."  I decided to create an activity pack for another favorite,  “Snowmen All Year” by Caralyn Buehne.

In this file:

-Verb Tense Sort:  Present, past, and future tenses of verbs found in the story are available to sort into the correct pile.  Each verb is on a snowball.  Students must pick the correct snowman to sort it into.

-Comprehension Board Game:  Students can practice their recall and comprehension skills on the task cards to move across the board game.  Various question types are used for practice.

-Describing With Adjectives: Most of the  adjectives from story are provided on cards (jackets).  Students must express nouns that can be used to describe it best.  Can it be described with more than one adjective?  

-/S/ Cluster Practice:  Each card has a “sn” cluster.  Students must correctly produce it in order to hold onto the card. f the student responds correctly, they can hold onto the card.  If they pick the card, “snow ball fight,” they will lose a turn!  The student with the most cards at the end of the game is the winner.

How do I plan on using this pack to reduce usage of colored ink?  I was going to make 5 laminated books for each skill and one of just the blank forms.  I will make 5 since that is my largest group size.  This way, I can easily grab and use these graphic organizers and they become dry erase!!  Easy to reuse with various groups!  But yes, I can also just print some in blank-and-white ink too if I want students to use pencils!  Grab this HUGE and helpful download HERE!
