Preposition Scenes For Younger Students! (for the entire year!)

Have you seen my Preposition Scenes activity?!  It has been a HUGE hit!  I have received a recent request to create a similar activity but designed for younger students to work on more basic prepositions.  So...I did!

How can you use this activity?  Well, each page is for a different theme/season/holiday.  Each page uses one object and has it located all over the page.  There is a sentence strip to elicit the response to the basic "where" question: "Where is the _____?"  There even a visual in the pack of the packet for all of the prepositions!  

Can your students locate all of the named item in the picture?  Can they use their knowledge of prepositions (using the visual if necessary) to express the items locations?!  TONS of opportunities to work on prepositions & drilling!

DIY Snowman Fun!!

Are you looking for a quick and easy idea to target TONS of language skills all in one?!?!!?  Grab a piece of paper, a marker and some crayons and you are ready to go!!

Before my students arrived, I drew the three balls of snow so it looked like a snowman on a piece of paper.  I also added the cloze sentence strip on the top.  My students still need this assistance in order to produce complete answers.

What could be addressed with this simple activity?

• Snowman vocabulary: what parts does the snowman need?
• Following directions: "draw a scarf on the snowman" "draw three blue buttons on the snowman" You can EASILY make the directions as simple or complex as you need!  Multiple students at different levels?  Give each one different directions, they won't even notice that some are more difficult!
• Prepositions:  I was targeting the concept "on" with this task but you can work on any concept!!  You can have the students draw the pieces or you can do it for them..."where's the ___?"
• Answering questions: "What goes on the head?" "Where's the hat?" "When do you build a snowman?" "Why is the snowman wearing a scarf?"
• Describing:  students can decorate their snowman and tell you what they did using adjectives, colors, locations, parts, functions, and more!

This fun and easy activity can be used with multiple groups or groups with multiple goals!  It is cheap, quick preparation, and can be easily adapted!  How will you use this idea?!

Preposition Journey! ((app review))

Are you looking for more ways to work on prepositions or answering "where" questions?!  Then, this app by Virtual Speech Center is for you!

Preposition Journey:

This app has three different animals (squirrel, fox, and bunny) that can be found in three different scenes (city, island, and lake).

For following is a list of prepositions targeted in this app: In, on , under, next to, in front of, behind, in the back, between, above, below, beside, in the middle, outside, out, over, near, far, on the side, on the left, on the right.

On the main page, you can alter the settings of the app based on you and your students' needs.

Once you are ready, you can hit start to begin!  You can select the students or add them to the list if they are not already added.  You can work with multiple students at a time!  The app automatically switches from student to student so you do not have to!

You can select a scene, receptive and/or expressive, and which prepositions to target for each student!  No need for fighting over scenes!!  You can review using all prepositions or focus/drill using one.

For receptive tasks:  Students will be presented with the prompt, "Show  me the ____."  For example, “Show me the bunny in the basket.”  Then, students will select from the pictures provided.  After the select it, they are given time to express it (and can record and replay their responses).

For expressive tasks:  Students are presented with a "where" question such as "Where is the bunny?"  Then, they must express their responses using their targeted prepositions!  They can record their responses, replay them, and mark their answers correct/incorrect!

Once you are done with the prompts provided or just ready to end, you can click "finish."  Then, you are brought to a score report for the entire group.

St. Patrick's Day Word Fun!

I know it is a long way off but I wanted to help those that plan way in advance!  I created my popular word fun downloads with a St. Patrick's Day theme!


Have fun practicing receptive and expressive language skills with this fun download!

In this file:

-Where’s the shamrock?  Practice answering “where” questions and using prepositions with this card game.  If a student picks the card, “luck of the Irish,” students will get an extra turn!  The student with the most cards at the end will be the winner!

-Why Questions Board Game:  Students can practice responding to “why” questions using this fun board game.  Visual provided.

-Lucky Context Clues:  Students will pick a card and use their context clues to determine the meaning of the underlined word.  Each card has a point value.  The students will add up the points when the game is over.  The student with the most points is the winner!

-Lucky Definitions:  Students will pick a card.  A word will be provided for them to define.  Students should be encouraged to use the visual provided to instruct in different ways to define words provided.  For each definition stated, they will get a point.  At the end, the students with the most points is the winner!

-Green Things Word Search:  Practice categorizing items by color and have fun with this worksheet!

Groundhog's Day Word Fun!

Use this three-activity pack to work on vocabulary, verbal expression, and pragmatic skills!

In this file:
-Preposition Fun Card Game:  Students pick a card and respond to the “where” question using their prepositions.  If they pick the “Here Comes Spring” card, they get a bonus turn.  The student with the most cards at the end is the winner!

-Groundhog Go Togethers:  Matching cards to be used as a memory or go fish game.  Students can practice identifying and expressing vocabulary words that go together.

-Good Groundhog vs. Bad Groundhog:  Students will read each situation card and sort to the good groundhog (sun) and bad groundhog (cloud).
